The Sugar Diaries...

photo 3-2photo 4-2photo 5-2 How are we doing?

Well, it's been tough. We are now on day 7 and we're just a little surprised that we made it this far to be honest. We do feel like all we are eating are nuts, seeds, salads, peanut butter, oats and eggs though. Don't get me wrong, we love all these foods. But what we really want to do right now, right in this moment, is head to a local American restaurant and have pancakes smothered in sauce and ice cream and chocolate...you get the point. Some moments have been easier than others. When we're out and about, or distracted, it's easy to get on with. But when Friday and Saturday night rolled around, all we could think about was celebratory wine, curry and chocolate. Celebratory because we made it through the week on top of giving up the sugar! Instead, Saturday night was spent scouring the internet for weird food items to help make the next Spirulina and Sesame Balls (I know, the what now?).  Quinoa, Chia seeds, Raw Cacao powder, Rice Malt Syrup are all new items that have entered into our household.

Some good news is that the headaches have subsided, and there has been some improvement in the energy levels mid-late afternoon so far. Do we think the cravings are starting to ease yet? Studies show it takes 21-28 days to form a habit. Other studies show it takes 66 days...So, there is a long way to go! It has however, made us really think about what we're giving to our children though. Feeding them 'wholegrain' cereal in the morning, with some juice and offering them snacks like raisins and fruit is equivalent to eating their way through a Mars-bar-and-coke-can of sugar. That is alarming. Not having chocolate and sweets in the house, is definitely the way forward though. If it's not there, they can't have it. Being creative with new ingredients and getting them involved is something we'll definitely continue with.

Day 4 - Morning at a 'Mums & Tots' group was tough when it was time for tea and biscuits! Managed to skip these and opted for a banana instead. Mini applause please. Reminded that it is key to have healthy snacks to hand, otherwise the risk of indulging in sugar is very tempting.

Day 5 - Experimenting with different flours today. Made some Rye bread - which is incredibly easy. But did result in near slicing off of finger due to the cement-like texture. It was just about edible, with a good amount of avocado & honey added! We made some Cinnamon and Honey cookies with spelt flour - which were similar in texture to gingerbread biscuits. Not too shabby with a good cuppa. And for the evening, we made pizzas (again with the spelt flour), that the kids refused to eat! Oh well, covered in mozzarella and healthy vegetable toppings it did help disguise the heavy, dry base. Will try again with this one - needs some work! No headaches today.

Day 6 - Breakfast was overnight oats with frozen berries. And the morning was spent making a Fig and Walnut loaf from the spelt flour - which was indeed, very yummy. We made a curry from scratch in the evening, avoiding  the normal half a jar of mango chutney on the side :( We avoided the naans and even made cauliflower rice - yep, hardcore.

Day 7 - An afternoon nap was needed today, due to low energy levels. Today was tough for some reason, wanting every piece of sugar in sight whilst walking down the aisles at Tesco. We resisted! Out of the Cinnamon and Honey spelt cookies calls for some more creative baking...What next - Sweet Potato Truffle Balls? Almond Butter Bark? Avocado and Coconut Lollies? *sigh*

The Sugar Diaries...

Everyone loves a bit of chocolate now and again. And cake. And sweets...but when you can't get through the day without them, maybe something needs to change?! Inspired by the thousands of 'foodies' on Instagram, we decided to take up the challenge of going sugar-free for a month. We both knew what a challenge it would be, so mentally prepared & cleared out our cupboards to start Easter Monday.  photo 3photo 4photo 1photo 2photo 5photo 2-2

We were both Brides before wedding photographers, so we decided to blog about our journey - as we know leading up to your wedding often brings with it a desire to get in shape. If you are on Instagram, you can follow along for daily inspiration (or just to laugh at us)!

What is surprising to both of us, is just how much food has 'hidden' sugars in. Not just cutting back on cakes, sweets, chocolate, but also stopping things like cereals, fruit juices, sauces, and even fruit itself has crazy amounts of sugar in it. A banana alone can have about 7 teaspoons of sugar in it. 7?! We had no idea. Well, we're not going quite that crazed to cut out fruit, so allowing ourselves natural sugars. There are so many opinions on whether or not fruit should be eliminated, but make your own mind up on that one!

Day 1 & 2 were seriously TOUGH. Headaches came thick & fast, and doses of regular paracetemol throughout the day just didn't shift them. Eating huge amounts of almonds, avocados, vegetables and whole peanut butter, just didn't quite hit the spot for me. My energy was low. Felt more tired than normal, I had to keep reminding myself why I was doing this!? Looking forward to blood sugar levels stabilising.

Day 3 - Seriously irritated today! Headaches were not so bad, but felt so ratty all morning. I want cake!! Feel like I'm eating more than normal, searching anywhere for those little energy hits. Somehow a strawberry just doesn't hit it. Thank goodness we didn't give up tea...Today I've baked some chickpea cookies (which my son, who takes his cookies seriously, ate 2 without questioning them) and made some granola with coconut oil and honey. Recipes to follow...

Are you tempted to join us?! x

A new year, a new start...

Ok so the new year started a while ago now, but we have been very busy! The end of 2013 ended with me giving birth to my third baby - Eadie Lyvia. She is an absolute delight and I'm completely in love with her. I'll share her story with you another time, but here are a few images of my new beauty...

So, this brings me to announce some big news! I have recently decided to join my business together with one of my closest friends Emma (of Emma White Photography)! Emma and myself have worked together for a number of years, each with our own separate photography businesses. Each time we work together, we have so much fun and really motivate and learn from each other. So Jade Alana Photography and Emma White Photography will now be known as: Coral & Stone Photography. We are so excited to see in lots of new changes this year and develop our business together.

What does this mean for you? If you have booked myself or Emma to document your wedding day or lifestyle session, then you can be sure that you will get exactly what you are hoping for! I will remain your lead photographer if you booked me under Jade Alana Photography, and the same will apply if you booked Emma as your photographer :) We are excited to share with you our new blog and have lots of new work to show you in the coming weeks. If you'd like to hear more about what we can do for you, then please get in touch - we'd love to send you one of our new brochures!

Catching up... {wedding photographer, northamptonshire}

Last weekend was just what I needed. My loving husband kindly took the kids off my hands so I could concentrate on working & generally catching up. This blog has been a little neglected lately but I have good reasons!! I've been busy shooting weddings, 2nd shooting for various photographers, planning exciting projects for the future & baking baby no. 3!We are so thrilled to be expecting again and thankfully I'm over the I-just-wanna-sleep-every-second-and-throw-up-everywhere glamorous stage, phew. I'm due in November & cannot wait to meet him or her :) Here is a little pic of our 12 week scan:

As I mentioned, I've been 2nd shooting for various photographers this year, and I really enjoy this side of shooting weddings. It gives me a chance to take a step back, look at things in a new way & take on a more relaxed approach as I push myself to try new things. It's great to see how other photographers work & how they interact throughout the day, so it's a great learning process!

Back in December (yes, I know...how long ago?!) I shot a wedding with Lee Garland at Temple in London for Erica & Alexander. Their wedding was elegant & romantic, filled with candles, twinkle lights & gorgeous Christmas wreaths. Here are some I shot whilst assisting Lee for the day:

Happy Birthday Little Berry...{Portrait photographer, Northamptonshire}

preview.jpg

I know everyone says it, but 2012 passed by so very quickly. I guess it had something to do with moving house, moving to another town, Bailey (my boy) starting Nursery, my husband starting a new job & of course, another addition to our little family. We had been in our new house just 4 weeks when Lana made her appearance. Right on time, too! At the weekend, we celebrated her 1st birthday. I just don't know where the time has gone - maybe it's being busier with two little ones that things seem to fly by, days roll into one another and time just, passes you by. The thing is, this makes me sad. I don't like time flying by so quickly - because I know my little ones won't be so little anymore, and also that means I'm getting older!! This past year has been so challenging in so many different ways. But getting to know our little girl day by day, is just the most amazing gift. She is such a funny little character! She started out her life, with a very quick & easy delivery and didn't actually properly cry for the first 8 weeks! She was very chilled & just slotted right into our family perfectly. Her chilled-out character is definitely from her Daddy! I have loved watching the relationship develop & blossom with her older brother (which took a little while) & I love seeing the fun they have together already. Lana is hard to make laugh. No matter what we try, nothing really gets out a proper belly laugh from her. Apart from Bailey that is. He can tease her, snatch things away from her, do the general brother stuff to her, but at the end of the day, he is her most favourite. She lights up when he comes in the room, and I love seeing that.

With every day that passes, no matter how little or trivial the experience may be, I want to capture something. My instagram feed is pretty much ALL pictures of my children! I want to remember this time in my life. When the days seemed long sometimes, when the nights seemed even longer, when my son told me he loved me, when my daughter learnt to take her first steps & got her first pair of shoes. I want to remember these simple yet precious moments, because it's all too easy to let life pass you by. So, here's to today, and celebrating Lana's first year.

Lana, my darling girly. I love you more than I can possibly express. Happy Birthday little sweet Berry. You are beautiful, love Mummy xxx

I absolutely LOVE Pinterest. Seriously cannot get enough. Getting lost in a world of beautiful imagery can be a little distracting at times. But I've thought of a good excuse to waste spend hours scrolling through photos - if you're a future Bride or Groom, finding images that inspire you or that you love, whether it be a pose or location, type of lighting or setting - why not create a board and share it with me? That way we can both be on the same page as we're thinking & planning your Engagement photos or Bridal portraits. Win win! Now I'm not saying I'll copy the image - but I'm open to be inspired & take my own spin on things. Follow me here to get lost in a world of all things pretty...

I look at my children, and I feel blessed. So totally & utterly blessed. Yes, some days it's hard - of course, but I feel like I'm getting into the swing of having 2 children now...learning new routines & what works best for all of us. I love that I get to spend time with them & also that I get to be creative & continue with my photography at the same time. I take a LOT of photos of them - and some of you will realise that if you follow me on instagram! Yes I have become one of those. For those who don't follow me, here are some little snippets of life lately...
